Machine Learning and AI Engineer Salary in India (2026): Up to ₹60 LPA by Experience and Role

An AI engineer in India earns an average base salary of ₹10 LPA, and a machine learning engineer averages ₹10.23 LPA, according to Glassdoor and PayScale India. At the top end, senior AI talent earns up to ₹60 LPA, per TeamLease Digital, and the 1 Finance Global Economic Outlook Report 2026 (using TeamLease RegTech data) puts the average for generative AI engineers with 8+ years at ₹60 lakh. Every figure names its source and when it was collected (24–25 September 2026), so you can see which numbers describe the whole market and which describe its top end.

AI and ML engineer salary in India at a glance

The averages describe the whole market, which includes many early-career engineers at IT services firms. The top of the market sits much higher, as the next sections show. Read the average as the floor you should clear, not the ceiling on what you can earn.

Your years of experience move your pay first. PayScale is the only independent source that splits ML engineer and data scientist pay by experience.

The steep step is from early career to mid-career: ML engineer pay more than doubles. That is the point where you stop training models in notebooks and start owning them in production.

Recruiters, who fill roles at product companies, GCCs and funded startups, report higher figures in total compensation:

For ML engineers, recruiter figures run about 1.7 times PayScale's at entry and 1.8 times at mid-career (our arithmetic). Use the independent figures to see where you stand, and the recruiter figures to see what the best-paying employers offer.

AI engineer salary for freshers

A fresher ML engineer averages ₹5,96,082 in total pay, per PayScale. Freshers who land at better-paying employers earn more: TeamLease Digital's Digital Skills and Salary Primer FY2025-26 puts freshers in AI and cloud at up to ₹8.5 LPA, and the 1 Finance report puts entry-level generative AI engineers at approximately ₹12 lakh. What decides your end of that spread is what you can show: a deployed model or LLM app, with tests, that a hiring manager can open.

Senior AI engineer salary

Mid-career ML engineers average ₹20,63,932 base on PayScale. At the senior end, TeamLease Digital reports that senior AI talent can earn up to ₹60 lakh a year, and that senior generative AI engineering and MLOps talent in GCCs earns up to ₹60 lakh. The 1 Finance report puts the average for GenAI engineers with 8+ years at ₹60 lakh.

• Machine learning engineer. Builds, trains and ships models: features, training pipelines, evaluation, serving. Close to the AI engineer in pay on every source.
• AI engineer. Builds products on top of models, more and more on LLMs: retrieval, agents, evaluation and the API around them.
• Data scientist. Turns data into decisions with statistics and models. Shows the highest average of the three core roles on Glassdoor.
• MLOps engineer. Keeps models running in production: deployment, monitoring, drift and retraining. Averages ₹14.3 lakh base, well above the ML engineer.
• GenAI and agentic AI engineer. New titles. Their averages look low because the samples are small and mostly early-career; on Glassdoor's list for agentic AI engineers, most profiles have 1–6 years at services firms.
• Prompt engineer. The lowest average in the table. Prompting alone is now a skill every AI role has, not a job of its own.

Your employer shapes the number more than your title does. On Glassdoor's Generative AI Engineer page, company medians run from ₹4 lakh at Wipro and Cognizant to ₹35 lakh at Deloitte, for the same title.

Where LLM and GenAI work pays more

These averages hide a clear pattern: once you have a few years behind you, GenAI engineering pays above general ML work.

Set that against recrew.ai's AI/ML engineer averages of ₹10 LPA at 0–2 years and ₹52 LPA at 8+ years, and GenAI work sits above at every stage. If you are deciding what to learn next, other sources agree on the size of the gap:

• RAG, fine-tuning and LLMOps. recrew.ai states that LLM fine-tuning, RAG and LLMOps experience command 20 to 40% more than generalist ML profiles at the same experience.
• AI skills on a data science profile. On PayScale, data scientists with AI skills average ₹13,62,522 base against ₹10,17,652 for all data scientists, 34% more (our arithmetic). It is the one independent figure in our set that measures an AI premium.
• Agents and orchestration. TeamLease Digital reports that mid-level professionals in prompt engineering, agent design and orchestration earn up to ₹35 lakh.
• Scarcity. TeamLease Digital found one qualified engineer for every 10 open GenAI roles (reported by PTI, August 2025).

The premium goes to engineering depth, not to the keyword. On PayScale, software engineers who list AI skills show no premium at all (11 profiles), and recrew.ai notes that prompt engineer job titles have dropped around 40% since 2023. What pays is the work behind the label: retrieval that returns the right passage, an evaluation suite that proves it, an agent with approval gates and budget limits, and a deployment that stays inside its cost.

What moves your AI engineer salary

1. Employer type

The 1 Finance report found that GCCs generally pay 12–20% more than traditional IT services companies, and that AI and data science roles command premiums of 30–50%. If you work at a services firm today, moving to a GCC or product company is often your biggest single step.

2. Production skills

The MLOps engineer's ₹14.3 lakh average base, against ₹9 lakh for the ML engineer on the same source, shows what employers pay for: models that run, are monitored and get retrained. If you can ship with FastAPI and Docker, track your experiments, watch for drift and report cost, you are doing the work that pays.

3. Switching with a scarce skill

The Michael Page India Salary Guide 2026, reported by Business Standard, found 30% to 40% hikes during job switches for scarcity skills, against a 9.1% average increase, and noted 49% year-on-year growth in AI/ML job postings. TeamLease Digital found that people who switch into AI and data science roles see 25–45% salary increases within a year. Time your switch for when your portfolio already proves the next level.

4. Projects a hiring manager can test

Hiring managers for AI roles check a short list. You can prepare for every item:

• A model chosen by what a mistake costs, not by accuracy alone.
• A RAG app with a golden test set and a regression suite, not a demo that worked once.
• An agent that acts behind an approval gate, with step and budget limits.
• A deployed service with a cost report and a rollback plan.
• The theory round: explain backpropagation, attention and a loss function in your own words.

How to read AI salary figures

• Check the title behind the figure. Several salary sites redirect "AI Engineer" or "GenAI Engineer" to a different title, so a quoted figure may describe another role.
• Check the sample. Agentic AI pay on Glassdoor rests on 21 salaries; data scientist pay on PayScale rests on 1,267 profiles.
• Base or total? Senior recruiter bands include stock and bonuses. Your in-hand pay is lower than CTC.
• Who is publishing it? Recruiters see the top of the market. Aggregators see the whole of it. You need both views before you negotiate your offer.
