Three salary sites publish a data engineer figure for India. They measure slightly different things, so read them side by side.
| Measure | Figure | Source | Sample and update |
|---|---|---|---|
| Average base pay (reported) | ₹9,74,783 | PayScale, average base | 1,284 profiles, updated 14 Jul 2026 |
| Average base pay (advertised in job posts) | ₹9,68,560 | Indeed, average base | 1.1k salaries, updated 20 Sep 2026 |
| Average salary | ₹11,00,000 | Glassdoor, average | 43,834 results |
| Average base pay | ₹10,00,000 | Glassdoor, average base | 43,834 results |
| 90th percentile base pay | ₹20,00,000 | PayScale, 90th percentile | 1,284 profiles |
Source: PayScale India, Indeed India and Glassdoor India data engineer pages, read on 24–25 September 2026.
The three averages sit within ₹1.31 lakh of each other. PayScale and Glassdoor collect pay that people report. Indeed's figure comes from salaries advertised in job posts over the past 36 months. Glassdoor's headline average sits above its own average base because the page also shows additional pay averaging ₹1 lakh a year. So when someone quotes "₹11 LPA", ask whether that is base or base plus bonus.
Data engineer salary by experience
Experience is the first thing that moves your pay. PayScale is the only independent source that breaks data engineer pay down by years.
| Experience | Average pay | Pay type | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Under 1 year | ₹5,18,398 | Total compensation | PayScale, average (125 profiles) |
| 1–4 years | ₹8,10,624 | Total compensation | PayScale, average (965 profiles) |
| Mid-career (5–9 years) | ₹16,66,470 | Base | PayScale, average (330 profiles) |
| Experienced (PayScale's senior band) | ₹24,41,221 | Base | PayScale, average (116 profiles) |
Source: PayScale India data engineer pages (updated between March and July 2026), read on 24–25 September 2026.
Pay roughly doubles between the 1–4 year band and the mid-career band. That jump is where most data engineers move from writing jobs other people design to designing the platform themselves.
Recruiters see a different slice of the market: offers at product companies, global capability centres (GCCs) and funded startups, counted as total compensation. Their numbers run higher.
| Experience | Average | Top 10% | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| 0–2 years | ₹8.5 LPA | ₹18 LPA | recrew.ai, total compensation |
| 2–5 years | ₹18 LPA | ₹30 LPA | recrew.ai, total compensation |
| 5–8 years | ₹32 LPA | ₹55 LPA | recrew.ai, total compensation |
| 8+ years | ₹46 LPA | ₹80 LPA | recrew.ai, total compensation |

At 2–5 years, the recruiter average (₹18 LPA) is about 2.2 times PayScale's 1–4 year figure. Use the independent number to judge where you stand today. Use the recruiter number to see what the better-paying employers offer, and what you need to show them to get there.
Data engineer salary for freshers
A fresher data engineer averages ₹5,18,398 in total pay in the first year, per PayScale. Better-placed freshers earn more: TeamLease Digital's Digital Skills and Salary Primer FY2025-26, as reported by Business Standard in August 2025, puts freshers in data engineering at up to ₹8.5 lakh. recrew.ai's 0–2 year average is also ₹8.5 LPA.
What separates the two ends is rarely the degree. It is whether you can show a pipeline that runs, clear a timed SQL round, and explain one design choice you made and why.
Senior data engineer salary
Experienced data engineers earn up to ₹40 LPA base at PayScale's 90th percentile (116 profiles). In Bengaluru GCCs, PlugScale's June 2026 benchmark puts the top fixed pay for data engineers with 10+ years at ₹82 LPA, based on its own market observations. TeamLease Digital reports senior data engineering pay "crossing ₹30 lakh in several sectors". The top of the market sits at GCCs and product companies, and it pays for platform design, cost control and the judgement to keep pipelines running.
Data engineer salary by skill: AWS, Azure, GCP and Big Data
PayScale publishes pay for data engineers who list a given skill. These are skill figures, not job titles, and they show which skills sit with higher pay.
| Skill | Average base pay | Source | Sample |
|---|---|---|---|
| Google Cloud (GCP) | ₹11,47,826 | PayScale, data engineer with GCP skills | 49 profiles (small sample) |
| Amazon Web Services (AWS) | ₹11,20,188 | PayScale, data engineer with AWS skills | 199 profiles |
| Big Data Analytics | ₹10,33,739 | PayScale, data engineer with Big Data Analytics skills | 133 profiles (last updated Feb 2025) |
| Microsoft Azure | ₹9,91,367 | PayScale, data engineer with Azure skills | 225 profiles |
| All data engineers (baseline) | ₹9,74,783 | PayScale, data engineer | 1,284 profiles |
Source: PayScale India skill pages for data engineers, read on 24–25 September 2026.
Against the all-data-engineer average, GCP skills sit 18% higher, AWS 15%, Big Data 6% and Azure 2% (our arithmetic on PayScale's figures). recrew.ai's guide states that "cloud data platform depth in Redshift, BigQuery, or Databricks adds 15 to 25% to base salary". The two sources point the same way: deep cloud skill pays.
Job titles tell a different story. Glassdoor's averages for titles that carry a cloud name sit below the plain "Data Engineer" title.
| Job title | Average salary | Source | Sample |
|---|---|---|---|
| Data Engineer | ₹11,00,000 | Glassdoor, average | 43,834 results |
| GCP Data Engineer | ₹8,81,228 | Glassdoor, average | 62 results |
| AWS Data Engineer | ₹8,80,000 | Glassdoor, average | 237 results |
| Azure Data Engineer | ₹8,21,000 | Glassdoor, average | 300 results |
| Big Data Engineer | ₹8,10,000 | Glassdoor, average | 929 results |

Our reading: the skill pays, the label does not. A role titled after one cloud is often a narrower, tool-specific role. What lifts pay is depth on one cloud plus the platform skills that travel with you: Spark, a cloud warehouse, orchestration and data modelling. Pick the cloud your target employers use, go deep on it, and learn to map your design onto the other two.
Data engineer salary by city
None of the independent salary sources we read publishes a sourced city-by-city figure for data engineers in India, so we do not print a city table. The one city-specific benchmark in our set is PlugScale's Bengaluru GCC table (June 2026): data engineers with 0–2 years there earn up to ₹16 LPA in fixed pay, and those with 3–5 years up to ₹32 LPA. Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Pune and the NCR hold most GCC and product roles, so the employer usually explains more of a pay gap than the city does. When you compare two offers, compare the employer type first.
Related roles: data analyst, ETL developer, analytics engineer
Many data engineers arrive from a neighbouring role. Here is how those roles compare on one source with one method.
| Role | Average salary | Source | Sample |
|---|---|---|---|
| Data Platform Engineer | ₹18,62,535 | Glassdoor, average | 50 results (about 30 salaries) |
| Analytics Engineer | ₹14,50,000 | Glassdoor, average | 2,792 results |
| Data Engineer | ₹11,00,000 | Glassdoor, average | 43,834 results |
| Data Analyst | ₹6,70,500 | Glassdoor, average | 35,624 results |
| ETL Developer | ₹6,22,500 | Glassdoor, average | 1,475 results |
Source: Glassdoor India role pages, read on 24–25 September 2026. PayScale cross-check: data analyst ₹5,77,472 and ETL developer ₹7,15,296 average base.
- Data analyst to data engineer. The most common switch. On Glassdoor the data engineer average is about 1.6 times the analyst average. You already know SQL; the step up is Python, a scheduled pipeline and one cloud.
- ETL developer to data engineer. ETL developers build the same flows in drag-and-drop tools. Moving to code-first pipelines (Python, Spark, Airflow, dbt) is what turns a ₹6.2 lakh average into an ₹11 lakh one.
- Analytics engineer. The dbt-and-modelling role between analyst and engineer. It shows a ₹14.5 lakh average, but only one source publishes it, so treat it as a pointer, not a benchmark.
- Data platform engineer. The role that runs the platform other engineers build on. It shows the highest average here, on a small sample of about 30 salaries.
What moves your data engineer salary
1. The employer you work for
The 1 Finance Global Economic Outlook Report 2026, using TeamLease RegTech data and reported by Business Today in June 2026, found that GCCs generally pay 12–20% more than traditional IT services companies. At the same experience level, moving from a services firm to a GCC or product company is often the single biggest jump you can make.
2. Depth on one cloud and one platform
Cloud data platform depth adds 15–25% to base, per recrew.ai. Depth means you can set up access, build ingest, query the lake, load a warehouse and keep the monthly bill in check, on one cloud, without a tutorial open.
3. Projects a hiring manager can open and run
Hiring managers check a short list of things, and you can prepare for each:
- A pipeline that runs on a schedule, with retries and an alert when it fails.
- Loads that can be re-run without creating duplicates, and a backfill you can explain.
- Data quality tests, and what happens when one fails.
- A Spark job you tuned, and what you saw in the Spark UI before and after.
- SQL with window functions and CTEs, written under time.
- A cost figure: what your pipeline costs per month and how you cut it.
4. Switching at the right time
The Michael Page India Salary Guide 2026, reported by Business Standard in March 2026, found that people with scarcity skills saw 30% to 40% hikes during job switches, against a 9.1% average increase. TeamLease expects data and AI-first professionals to see 10–12% salary growth in 2026. Staying put compounds slowly. A planned switch, made once your portfolio proves the next level, resets your base.
5. The data layer under AI
Companies building AI products need clean, governed data feeding their models: embeddings, vector stores and retrieval pipelines. Data engineers who can build that layer sit next to the AI budget. It is a skill to add once your core pipeline work is solid.
How to read any salary figure you see
- Base or total? Base is fixed pay. Total adds bonus, profit sharing and stock. CTC also counts employer PF and gratuity, so your in-hand pay is lower than CTC.
- Average or median? A few high earners pull an average up. Only PayScale publishes a median for data engineers (about ₹9.75 lakh base).
- Reported or advertised? Indeed figures are what employers advertise. PayScale and Glassdoor figures are what people report earning.
- How big is the sample? A figure from 8 salaries tells you far less than one from 1,284. Check the count before you quote it.
- How old is it? Check the update date. A figure from 2025 describes last year's market.
How SkilD teaches this
The skills that move pay in this article are the ones the PG Program in Data Engineering is built around. It runs 34 weeks with 206 live hours and 17 projects, taught live by industry experts, including faculty from Mastercard and Paytm. Classes run on weekends, Saturday and Sunday from 10 AM to 1 PM IST, and every class is recorded and up within 24 hours. The first class is on Saturday 28 November 2026.
You start with SQL, Python, Linux and Git, then build on the cloud you choose (AWS, Azure or GCP), with Spark and Databricks, Snowflake, Airflow, Kafka, dbt and governance after that. The projects are the ones hiring managers ask about: Kirana Ledger (your first scheduled pipeline), the Highway Toll Data Pipeline on your cloud, a Festival Sales Spark pipeline into Snowflake, and the Mandi Price Pipeline. A hiring week covers data-platform system design and timed SQL and Python rounds, and placement support runs until you have an offer.
More than 4,200 learners have trained with SkilD, and our learners work at 39+ companies. The highest recorded salary hike among them is 82%.
